How to structure a serious prompt using OpenAI's four-section format and Anthropic's contract style, how to let AI write your prompts for you, and three ways to shape reasoning: the debate pattern, prompt chaining, and Chain of Verification.

Vocabulary

  • Constraint — A limit you set in a prompt — length, tone, audience, what to avoid, what a good answer must include. Too few constraints is the usual reason AI output comes back generic.
  • Hallucination — When AI states something made up as if it were fact — an invented statistic, a study that doesn't exist. It generates what sounds likely, not what's verified.
  • Mega prompt — A long prompt that defines the AI's whole operating environment: identity, instructions, examples, and context. Your project spec is essentially one.
  • Prompt chaining — Running a sequence of prompts where each output feeds the next — generate, then critique, then improve. Slower, but noticeably more accurate.
  • System prompt vs. user prompt — The system prompt is hidden instructions given to the AI before you type anything; it defines how a tool behaves. The user prompt is what you type.
