    In this day and age, it is naïve to think that people aren't checking you out on the Internet. 0:06
    I mean, what's the first thing that you do when you want to know more about someone? 0:11
    You look them up on Facebook or Twitter or LinkedIn. 0:15
    Companies hire not only for skill level, but also for cultural fit. 0:18
    In big companies, this may not be such a priority. 0:22
    But with smaller firms, people like to hire those that they think they can work well with. 0:25
    Social media provides access to a wealth of information 0:29
    that may influence hiring decisions. 0:33
    In any case, it is always good to think about what you're putting out there 0:35
    and to curate your online presence. 0:38
    Let's quickly go over some of the things that you should be mindful of. 0:41
    First off, obviously, don't bad mouth your current or previous employers. 0:44
    It has become quite normal to vent about your workplace or boss on social media. 0:48
    Keep in mind that future employers might be looking for this type of information. 0:52
    Not all companies are like that. Some don't care what you put online. 0:56
    But you never want to decrease your chances of getting a job 1:00
    for something as simple as this. 1:03
    Now if you really want to vent on social media, 1:05
    at least make your profile private. 1:07
    Secondly, don't let unprofessionalism linger through your presence. 1:09
    What I mean by this is try and avoid any crazy photos, 1:13
    crude or crass comments all over your page, and things like that. 1:17
    Don't bash your coworkers, either. 1:20
    All these things may make you seem like you're someone that's difficult to work with. 1:22
    Social media has made it easier for recruiters to judge what kind of person you are 1:26
    and whether you'd be a great cultural fit. 1:31
    Don't let that get in the way of you getting your dream job. 1:33
    Social media has also made it easier for employers to weed out lies. 1:36
    Do not provide any fake references or lie about your qualifications. 1:41
    Most importantly, don't ever post anything that can be perceived 1:45
    as racist, biased, or illegal. 1:49
    And that's just a great thing to do in life in general. 1:51
    But social media can also be used to your benefit. 1:54
    You can really use the web to highlight any of your professional interests. 1:57
    Use LinkedIn to show any relevant organizations you're part of, 2:00
    and establish yourself as a thought leader by blogging and tweeting 2:04
    out great industry- and job-relevant articles. 2:08
    Now I want to emphasize the fact that not all companies are like this. 2:10
    Younger tech companies may not care at all about your social media gaffes. 2:14
    But, like I mentioned in the previous video, not all tech jobs are in tech companies. 2:18
    Sometimes you might be applying to more old-school companies, 2:24
    and you have to tread carefully. 2:27
