How Apps Work: The Builder's Vocabulary

Front end, back end, APIs, databases, and CRUD explained with a restaurant analogy, plus how all four connect in a single loop. Knowing where in that loop something broke is what turns a vague bug report into a one-prompt fix. Finishes with system prompts versus user prompts, and what to do when a builder keeps making a decision you didn't ask for.

Vocabulary

  • API (Application Programming Interface) — How two pieces of software talk to each other. Like a waiter: your app sends a request, the API carries it to the other system and brings back the result.
  • Back end — Everything happening behind the scenes — the logic, rules, and processing. The kitchen. Wrong results or mis-handled data are back-end issues.
  • CRUD — The four things you can do with stored data: Create, Read, Update, Delete.
  • Database — Where your app stores information that has to stick around — accounts, saved items, history. Data not saving, duplicating, or vanishing is a database issue.
  • Debugging — Figuring out why something isn't working. Being able to say whether it's a front-end, back-end, API, or database problem is what makes it fast.
  • Front end — Everything a user sees and touches — buttons, screens, layouts, forms. The storefront. Broken layouts and dead buttons are front-end issues.
  • System prompt vs. user prompt — The system prompt is hidden instructions given to the AI before you type anything; it defines how a tool behaves. The user prompt is what you type.
