We're going to shift gears a bit and
focus on sexuality.
0:00
You'll hear me continuously saying
this in videos, language is important.
0:04
Let's make sure we're on the same page
with our understanding of gender,
0:09
sex, and sexuality so we understand
how they overlap and the differences.
0:13
Remember, gender is how someone
identifies, this is fluid and
0:21
not limited to male or female.
0:25
Sex is biological and assigned at birth.
0:31
Sexuality is who someone is attracted to.
0:38
To get a better understanding of this,
we need to know about the LGBTQ community.
0:43
I want us to understand these terms
as they apply to someone's sexuality.
0:48
LGBTQ stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual,
transgender, queer, and questioning.
0:55
You may see different
forms of this acronym too,
1:02
such as LGBTQ+,
LGBTQIA, or LGBTQIA+.
1:08
We'll have some info on those
in the teacher's notes.
1:14
Someone who identifies as lesbian
typically is a woman attracted to another
1:20
woman.
1:25
If someone identifies as gay,
1:28
they typically are a man
attracted to another man.
1:30
The reason I say typically is that gay
can be used by anyone attracted to
1:34
the same gender.
1:39
A person who is bisexual is attracted
to those of the same gender or
1:44
those of another gender.
1:48
As a reminder, someone who identifies
as transgender means that their
1:52
personal identity and gender do not
correspond with their birth sex.
1:57
You may have noticed transgender is spoken
about when we talk about gender and
2:01
sexuality.
2:06
I do this intentionally,
2:07
because someone who is transitioning
views themselves as a different gender.
2:08
Also, many trans folks' sexuality
changes when they transition.
2:13
Queer is an umbrella term for sexual and
2:21
gender minorities who are not
heterosexual or are not cisgender.
2:24
The term queer has a history
to it that is hurtful.
2:30
Queer used to be, and sometimes still is,
2:33
used as a slur to put down and
disrespect the LGBTQ community.
2:37
The community has begun to
reclaim the umbrella term and
2:42
use it with pride to identify themselves.
2:45
With this in mind, refrain from using
this term unless the person you're
2:48
speaking with expresses
that's how how they identify.
2:53
The reason questioning
is part of LGBTQ is that
2:57
someone may be exploring their sexuality.
3:00
Due to stereotypes, societal pressures,
disparities, and learning who you are,
3:03
someone may not immediately understand or
know their sexuality.
3:09
It may also change as they
learn more about themselves.
3:14
There is so
3:19
much more in regards to the LGBTQ+
community than we have touched on today.
3:19
We'll be offering more trainings
on these identities later.
3:25
Most importantly,
someone's sexuality isn't up to you.
3:29
You cannot decide someone's sexuality
based on how they appear or
3:33
what you know about them.
3:37
The only person who can decide
their own sexuality is them.
