the modulo operator % aka remainder operator returns the remainder of division. so 5 % 2 is 1 because 2 goes into 5 2 times with a remainder of 1. any odd number divided by 2 has a remainder of 1, so if x % 2 == 1, x is odd. same for multiples of 7, if x % 7 == 0, x is a multiple of 7, because we have divided by 7 and there is no remainder.
