It's good youre truing to use string concatenation. However, you need to add the strings using the + operator outside of the quotation marks. Anything inside of quotations, including a + is still a string.

var id = "23188xtr";
var lastName = "Smith";

var userName = id.toUpperCase() + "#" + lastName.toUpperCase();
